Montrey Aquarium - 15 Dec 2007
Before heading back to C-U for Christmas, Lauren and Randy brought me along for a pre-Christmas trip to Monterey, where Randy's Mother and Step-Father live. The highlight of this for me was, without a doubt, the Aquarium, which was yet another excuse to take a whole lot of pictures and see a lot of cute animals.

Images
View from the House
Randy's Mother's place is... impressively located just off the water.
View from the House, II
This is a view from the front porch.
Randy's Family
I've only met them the once, but I hope I get to again.
William and Bear
Posing in front of the house.
Otters
All good aquariums include a few otters.
Otters, II
They're such cute creatures.
Otters, III
Well, except when they're looking evil.
Otters, IV
But they're really just battling like cats.
Otters, V
Which is not to say that I want one as a pet.
Otters, VI
I could only get them so many toys, after all.
William and Otters
Well, one otter, and it's a statue.
Otter Bookmaking
Randy and William were enjoying the hands-on bits too.
Frogs
I like these guys. The flash offered some good lighting, too.
Photoluminescence
Of course, sometimes the flash is a hindrance. A tripod would have helped with this.
Photoluminescence, II
Still, I did a pretty good job. And they *allowed* flashes, which is something.
Tiny Photoluminescence
You can see something if you zoom in.
Vat of Jellies
I think these things scare me like most people are scared of spiders, but they're so *beautiful*!
Jellies
I was able to get a good amount of detail here and there...
William and Jellyfish
I like the contrast a lot.
Jellyfish
I got a pretty good amount of detail here too.
Jellyfish
As I already said, I was happy to have the flash.
Jellyfish
La la la! Jellyfish jellyfish jellyfish!
Anenomes
Well, no, they're jellyfish too.
Jellyfish
They're just hanging out on the bottom.
Tiny Jellyfish
The little baby jellies were on the bottom of hte tank, I guess so they could be protected.
More Jellyfish
Aah, the clearly-dangerous ones! I don't know if they were Man-O-War or not, but it's possible.
More Photoluminescence
With a bit of ambient light helping out.
Lighting up the Photoluminescents
More contrast, less beauty.
More Tiny Jellies
Again with flash, so they can be seen.
Yet More Jellies
I should have taken pictures of the labels.
Yet More Jellies, Flash
I guess that the contrast of the flash makes them worth holding on to.
More Dangerous Jellies
Still scary.
More Dangerous Jellies, II
Still beautiful.
Fun and Games
I think this exhibit was showing off how the foods we eat can be made responsibly.
School of Fish
Tuna, I believe.
School of Fish, II
There were a *lot* of them.
School of Fish, III
The contrast once again looked good.
Yet More Jellies
I really don't have anything to say.
Yet More Jellies
Nope.
Yet More Jellies
This space is intentionally left blank.
Yet More Jellies
My hovercraft is full of eels.
Man-O-Wars
Okay, I think these are the dangerous guys.
Man-O-Wars, II
Or at least I'll proclaim them as such.
Sunfish
Not a great shot of him, but he was *ugly*. And handsome. And impressive.
Sunfish, II
And in a great difficult-to-photograph tank. I'm not sure which shot is better.
Shark?
I think it's a shark.
Sunfish, Again
The tank is the centerpiece of the place, and... I've got to try a tripod next time.
Tuna Close-Up
Another shot, without flash, really looked a lot better.
Lookout Telescope
Look! Up in the sky!
William and Telescope
He certainly looked up in the sky.
Pigeon Racing
We told stories of pigeon racing for hours later. I think there might have been some impromptu racing involved.
Crab
Another impressive creature. (Yeah, I'm really running out of useful things to say.)
Back to the Otters
From above-land this time
Back to the Otters, II
They were just as fun to watch the second time.
Back to the Otters, III
So happy, so lazy...
Back to the Otters, IV
Such fun little guys.
William and Tim Eating
It was fun having Clam Chowder at the aquarium, if not a little weird.
Tim
As always, it's good to have some shots of me.
William and Tim
I'm always glad to be able to hang out with William for a while.
The Ocean
There's more water out than in.
Tide Pattern
I think this was an exhibit, I don't remember for sure.
Petting Zoo
All of the best aquariums have petting zoos like this.
Crab
Part of the petting zoo exhibit.
Starfish
It was a better petting zoo than most.
Manta Ray and Flatfish
A nice contrast of colors and shapes. (There's a nice, generic description.)
Flatfish
Cute little guy, eh?
Water Bird
I like how he's completely invisible in the thumbnail.
Vertical Fish
One last fish, on the way out. I suppose that it'd have been better to photograph the Scuba diver in there instead...
