Tim Gets A Jungle Jim's Photography Pass - 28 Dec 2005

Jungle Jim's is, in my opinion, the world's greatest grocery store. It's located just outside of Cincinnati; my family and I have been going there for well over a decade every time we're in the area, which happens at least twice a year as we visit my cousins in Middletown. The place is huge - about 6 acres, according to the web site, and I can believe it. The variety of food is amazing enough, but then you toss in a few odd set-pieces like a variety of animatronic creatures and a monorail...

The only real problem with Jungle Jim's is that they have a strict (and enforced!) no-photography policy. My family has long been stymied by this policy; we would love to take pictures every time, to document all the new things we have found in the store! The only way around this is to obtain a photography pass, good for one day only and generally awarded only to members of the media. Once, my Dad went out of his way to obtain a photography pass, so he could get pictures of various produce types for his class; so this year, I decided to give it a shot myself...

I took 218 pictures that day; and I got stopped at least 10 times as I went through the store, cheerfully taking pictures of anything that looked amusing to me. I don't remember being quite that *gleeful* for quite some time, especially when I got to hold up my photography pass to the bewildered employees. Thwarting authority *and* getting to finally document this most wondrous of grocery stores for my web site... Could anything be quite as much fun?

I really do recommend visiting the store. My pictures are nice, but they don't do it justice. Jungle Jim's is a place to be experienced.

Images
Taste of the Jungle
One of the first things you see on the new section of building is this sign, beckoning you to come further.
Jungle Jim's Pineapple Sign
If Jungle Jim's has a logo, it's this. But they don't really have *a* logo, it's more of a collective...
Suspended Monorail Car
This place is so big that
Start Your Carts
The actual entrance to the store is properly marked and easy to find... and makes for an amusing picture on its own.
Kraft Car
The Kraft car above the awning of the entrance adds something to the Start Your Carts bit.
Lobster Chair
This is one of the first things you see as you enter the store (except of course for the employees trying to stop you from taking pictures...).
Sushi Bar
The first of many specialty food sections all around the store; it's also not all that good, but it gets better from here.
Olive Pit
I didn't really know that there was that much variety to olives. I guess I was wrong.
Boar's Head Truck
This marks the deli section.
Shopper's Express
Near the front of the store are the standard groceries, so those that don't need to look for all other kinds of food can get in and out quickly. It's a nice, and new, touch.
The Big Cheese
This marks the cheese section of the store from afar.
Cheese Section
And oh, it is a big section!
Cheese Section, II
Though, perhaps, not as big as the booze section...
Cheeses of the World Map
They actually have the cheeses from all of these places.
Cheese Crate
The back of the Big Cheese.
Starbucks Coffee
Perhaps a questionable addition to the store, it's pretty much what you'd expect.
Cigar and Tobacco Section
This is a good place to buy empty cigar boxes, which are good for storing all sorts of odd stuff.
Hard Liquor Section
I'm not sure why this is kept apart from the rest of the store so clearly... or at least from the other booze sections.
Wine Section
The wine section on its own is as big as many grocery stores.
Wine Casks
I think this is just for show, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had something aging in there anyway...
Expensive Wine Aisle
It's somewhat blocked off, so kids don't break anything.
Reserve Cellar
This stuff is often nearly as expensive as the Expensive Wine Aisle.
Outhouses
What? Outhouses in a store?
The Bathrooms
Well, yes; they're entrances to the bathrooms!
Doggie Bathroom
Even the dogs get a place to relieve themselves...
Cold Beer Arrow
This way to booze!
Cold Beer Cave
It's a cute trick, to make it a fully cold room.
Two-Bill Jill
A response to "Two Buck Chuck", but with Jungle Jill instead...
Cooking School Entrance
Closed off, since it was in session; otherwise I would have tried to go in.
Candy Bumper Car
Candy and bumper cars. What could possibly go wrong with that combination?
Coming Beer & Wine Events
Maybe there will be some someday.
Sorcerer Jim
He's not exactly like Mickey in Fantasia, but he's close.
Elvis Lion
This is one of the early highlights of the store, a dancing animtronic lion that sings Elvis songs. Here, he's dressed up for Christmas.
Starlight Mint
I shouldn't get the impression that I'm eating her brains.
Peanut M&Ms
M&Ms don't give me the same sense of cannibalism as the Starlight Mint, which is probably good.
Amish Territory
Meaning, "there be good cheese here!"
Cooking School
This is the actual public face of the cooking school.
Flying Pig
They were like the Chicago Painted Cows, except in Cincinnati. You bet that Jungle Jim's got one.
Tur-Duc-Hens
The most decadent of all meats!
Elvis
A more straight-forward shot of their favorite mascot.
Elvis, in Context
This does a better job of showing off everything around him.
Beer Selection
1000 different beers? If only I could take advantage of this...
Specialty Meats
I can take advantage of this thing, anyway!
Semi-Boneless Quail
I don't know that I've ever had quail. I'm not sure what "semi-boneless" means, though.
Rattlesnake Meat
It's expensive, but where else can you buy a frozen rattlesnake?
Post Office
A new addition to the middle of the store. I guess it's a good idea...
Fear Da Tiger
As this is in Ohio, there are all sorts of random local things around the store too. This is a good example.
Root Family Farms
I guess that the Root Family is from Washington.
Apple Poster #1
I actually sent for a copy of this for my Dad, but it never came.
Apple Poster #2
Either one of these would be good for his class...
Fruit Basket Poster
....but this is just kindof pretty-looking.
Produce Section
This is my Dad's favorite part; he's a Horticulture Professor, and loves to pick up odd things for his classes.
Climbing Monkeys
These mark the bargain produce section. I don't really know why.
Vegetables
There's a lot of them. I guess that's the point.
Blue Potatoes
Dad always likes shots of blue potatoes, for whatever reason.
Produce Signs
This is how everything is written out in the store. I like the store-font idea.
Turnips
Fight the Rutabegas!
Peppers
This was a beautiful shot.
Peppers, II
And this was more beautiful. I love the colors...
Big G Cereal Band
It's good to know that Lucky, the Trix Rabbit, and the Honey Nut Cheerios Bee played music for Gilligan.
SS Minnow
The professor doesn't appear to like the music so much.
Welcome Sign
Welcome!, in the languages of the world.
Welcome Sign, II
It's a cute way to indicate that you're entering the foreign food section.
Welcome Sign, III
I like the Bart Simpson
Yellow Yam
No, I have no idea what this tastes like.
Kimchi Section
What other stores do you know of with a Kimchi section?
Kimchi Sign
And it's even properly labelled for easy spotting.
Odd Ice Creams
Corn & Cheese; Buko Salad; and Durian. I want to buy them all at some point, just to try them.
Crab Legs
I just like the idea of having a vat of them.
Rainbow Trout
Okay, so it's a bit cruel; but they sell fast...
Salted Cod
I like the "do not break" signs...
Flying Fishing Boats
All the better to catch air-sharks with!
Rickshaw
Yes, it indicates the start of the Asian Food section.
Restroom Footprints
They're convenient for finding the bathrooms, and the way out. A nice touch.
Kiwano Melons
They look dangerous; as I recall, they taste okay.
Ugli Fruit
These taste better.
Sweet Lemons
I don't think I've tried these...
Oxalis Tubers
It's good to have Dad proofread my captions.
Langka and Halo-Halo Ice Creams
Jackfruit and Fruit & Beans. Mmm-mmm!
Japanese Food
All of the appropriate aisles are labelled for convenient discovery (and picture-taking).
Hot Sauce Section, I
The hot sauce section of Jungle Jim's is really one of its highlights.
Hot Sauce Section, II
They have literally thousands of different hot sauces.
Hot Sauce Section, III
I really wish they would label them by how how they are (number of Scoville Units).
Adult-Oriented Hot Sauces
There's even a section for hot sauces that are inappropriate for kids!
Adult Hot Sauces - Interior
I doubt this really made my site NSFW.
Adult Hot Sauces - Interior, II
If I'd been a bit higher, maybe... maybe...
The Expensive Hot Sauces
There's also an area for the hot sauces that are more epensive than you would really pay.
Expensive Hot Sauces, Details
$899.00 for the most expensive one.
Gingerbread House
I don't know why this is next to the hot sauce section, but it is.
Asian Foods
Well, it's actually more of the treats-section here, but you can see the point.
German Foods
German candy, here.
Rice Section
That's a lot of rice.
Opera Signs
I don't think they really have operas performed here, but it wouldn't shock me that much if they did.
Fish Hatchery Section
Well, I don't know if they're actually hatching them here...
Hatchery Tanks
...but yes, those are live fish.
Water Pumps
What's that insignia over on the left?
Chernobel Nuclear Facility Components
Adding that extra-special warmth to all of the foods here!
Fish Signs
From the area next to the fish hatcheries, it's a good view of that section of the store. (Including the kitchen-gear area, where I didn't take many pictures.)
Cookware Section
I know that when I think of King Kong, I think of cookware!
More German Food
I never really thought about the different types of German food before I came to this place for the first time...
Sherwood Forest
This indicates the British Empire foods. You know, Vegemite.
British Food
Jams and such. So the good stuff.
Random Three-Wheeled Car
I guess this represents the British food too.
Little John
The Hampsterdance Song comes to mind...
Indian Food, Aisle 5
5 ailes of Indian food. Yum!
Thai Statue
"Presented to Jungle Jim's with our compliments; A Taste of Thai, 1997". Classy, I didn't spot it until this trip.
Jungle Jim on an Elephant
There were realistic-looking tusks sticking out of the wall; I don't think they were real ivory, though.
Sherwood Forest Tree
Somebody pointed out to me here that there was stuff to look at inside the tree.
British Food, Under the Tree
I suppose that I could have looked myself, like these guys did... but it was good I was tipped off.
Interior of Sherwood Forest Tree
For behold, there is stuff up there!
Interior of Sherwood Forest Tree, II
The tree even has an interior face...
Interesting Drinks
Lychee juice is pretty good; I can confirm that one.
South African Food
I couldn't properly identify this stuff if I tried.
Australian Food
This, though, I'd have a good chance on.
More German Food
How much *is* there?
Bulgarian, Hungarian, and Polish Food
I'm sure that they could fill a section each for these, but even this place has its space limits.
Hispanic Food Aisle 5
Plus Brazlian and other South American.
Olive Oil Section
They have a *section* for *olive oil*.
Pedro's Restaurante
This guy used to be Italian. I think they just added the sombrero.
Mexican Food
Mercado Gigante - yes, that's a lot of Mexican Food!
Israeli Food
Kosher food is the start of the little Ethnic Rooms.
Greek Food
These rooms are cute, small, and effective.
Scandinavian Food
They also hold a lot more stuff than it looks like they should.
Spanish Food
We've bought stuff from most of these rooms at some time or another.
Vinegar Section
I didn't even know that there were lots of vinegars in the world before they opened this bit up.
Expensive Vinegars
I certainly didn't know that some of them were actually expensive.
Expensive Vinegars, Details
Only $149.00 for the most expensive one of these...
Ethnic Cheeses
As opposed to the huge cheese section...
Mid East Aisle
Someday, I expect this to have its own section of the store.
Seed Distribution Mechanism
Or at least I think that's what it's for. It's a weird device. I should have investigated further.
Dutch Food
Back to the little rooms!
Irish Food
Irish food isn't generally that appealing to me... oh well.
French Food
This probably deserves its own store area too.
The Jungle Jim Story Theatre
They constantly show a video in here explaining the history of Jungle Jim's.
''Coming Soon''
It's a cute poster. I wish they would do a new version of the video, though.
Jungle Pets Three-Headed Bird
I'm really not sure how this thing represents pets. Do we *want* mutant pets?
Trapped Boston Terrier
A flat Boston Terrier, yes, but still trapped.
Bird Houses
And a Bat House. I hadn't seen that before.
Litter Box Mat
I really took this picture as evidence of the current "only put the ugly flat-nose cats onto boxes with cat products" phenomenon.
Very Proud Tim
I was quite excited to have this Photography Permit, let me tell you!
Chocolate Section
I don't like chocolate; but it's nice to get shots to show off to Beth, who couldn't be there.
Lindt Chocolates
Lindts are her favorite kind... but still, I don't think I want to buy any.
Fruit Truffles
I should really cut out taking pictures of this stuff, though.
Diet Vanilla Coke
This would be the last display of this product I would see for a long time, since it had left production the week or so before... (I used to drink a lot of it, too!)
Pitch Black II
Hmm... this is a new product. Let's try this out...
CranBlue
Dried cranberries and blueberries? Odd. Worth a picture.
Health Food Section
This is also a fairly new section of the store, and seems to be doing okay.
Healthy Carrots
Buff carrots, and sexy carrots; both are disturbing.
Juices, Juices, Juices
Just an odd sign. It was hard to spot ,too.
Ask the Brain
I don't think this machine has worked in years, but it still adds atmosphere.
Frozen Food Penguins
We've never bought much frozen food here. It's too difficult to get home.
To the Check-Out
The real point of this sign is that there's checkout registers on both sides.
Check-Out Lanes
It's one of the more efficient checkout systems I've seen in my years.
Gumballs
I usually have a bag of these around my house; it seemed like a good idea to show where I get them.
Giant Hershey's Bar
Not my cup of tea, but this has always been the easiest place to find them after Christmas.
Barber Shop
I don't think that this is a real part of the store. It'd be cool if it was, though.
News Clippings
There's been lots of articles about them over the years. I hope this makes a list.
Comment Box
"Comments... Compliments... Suggestions, or Gripes! Jungle Jim Wants To Know!!!"
Gift Certificates
If I lived in the area, I'd give these out as gifts regularly.
Jungle Wear
I actually have a few of these shirts.
Sports Team Sponsorship
I like that there's more space for sponsorship than there is for news clippings.
Pharmacy
Another recent addition.
Customer Service
I still owe them for so kindly getting me this photograpy pass...
Photography Permit
I was sad to give it up, but I was supposed to do so...
Store Exit
...and here's the way out. Goodbye, store!
Front of the Store Gym
Out in front of the store, they have a nice display of weather-hardened animals showing off the jungle aspect.
Front of the Store Gym II
I'm not sure if it gives a great indication of what will be in the store, but it's still amusing.
Front of the Store - Gorilla
It really is a jungle in there. (*groan*)
Front of the Store Fruits
Just to show off that it's not just produce, I guess.
Holiday Sign
I don't think I've been into the greenhouse that this sign points at yet.
Greenhouse
This is what the place looks like... not that this is of great importance.
Monkey on the Greenhouse
Yeoman Kong?
Stadium Seating
I like that these things are used as benches.
Cart Corral - Cowboy
"Please CORRAL Your Carts HERE, Pardner!"
Cart Corral - Elephant
"Remeber - Corral Your Carts Here!"
Cart Corral - Samurai
"Sushi Return Cart You... Betshi!"
Monorail Hut
This is where the monorail is eventually supposed to go to and from, when they get it hooked up.
Jungle Jim's Truck
Something to move things around, I guess.
Back Parking Lot
It looks pretty normal back here...
New Dragon
...but then you have this guarding the back entrance to the parking lot. Oh, it's such a strance place...
