Filoli - 09 Mar 2008
Filoli is a country house and (more interestingly) set of gardens a few miles away from my home in Mountain View. Beth and I visited the tourist attraction in early March, when the first flowers were blooming, and as always I took a bunch of pictures. Of course, it's tricky to label flower pictures, but I'll do what I can.

Images
Outside Flower Garden
The flowers outside of the estate were pretty, but only a glimpse of what was inside.
Outside Flowers
Still, I had to see what shots I could get.
Blooming Trees
They smelled good, too.
Stumpy Trees
Apparently a trademark view of the estate.
Stumpy Trees, II
Knowing the species would somehow be like cheating.
Stumpy Trees, III
Where's Dad when I need him?
The Mansion Tim and Flowers
That's a lot of flowers.
Beth and Flowers
She was definitely excited to be seeing this place.
Japanese Partition
The house tour was full of pretty, expensive stuff like this.
Living Room
I really didn't internalize too much of it, though.
Maps and Serving Pitchers
All I really got out of it was "this stuff is pretty."
Wall Painting
That, and I like wall paintings like this.
Outside Flowers
The outside had flower pots as well as planted flowers.
The Gardens
The gardens were the real attraction.
Garden Flowers
I liked these excessive flower counts.
Topiaries
One of Dad's favorite photographic targets is certainly fun for me as well.
Tall Topiaries
Were these clipped by hand, or by vertical lawnmower? I hope the latter.
Tulips
Beth's favorite flower.
Tulip
Our cat is named after this. Sortof.
The Back of the House
I think it's prettier than the front, anyway.
Photography
Getting the shot of the one flower.
Fields of Flowers
These looked much more free, which is pretty satisfying (in small quantities).
Bluebells
Is that right?
Landscape
I think this was supposed to look good in other seasons.
Small Maze
As I recall, this was supposed to be the layout of one of the actual mazes.
Walls of Flowers
Walls of flowers mean one thing - hummingbirds!
Hummingbird
I was excited to actually see one.
Hummingbird, II
I had never tried my hand at photographing one before.
Hummingbird, III
The trick, apparently, is to believe that you actually got it.
Hummingbird, IV
They're moving fast, but not *insanely* fast.
Hummingbird, V
So I took a lot of pictures, and a lot of them turned out...
Hummingbird, VI
...and for the sake of the story, I left even the vaguely adequate ones in.
Hummingbird, VII
They're cool though, neh?
Hummingbird, VIII
Only a couple more.
Hummingbird, IX
There. That's a hummingbird.
Back to Hedges
From the other direction this time, at least.
Goldrush Apple Tree
There, this is more up my Dad's alley. Goldrush!
Apple
Very descriptive.
Spitzenberg
Another apple tree.
Pink Pearl
And another. I don't think I've tried most of these apples.
Gravenstein
They must be west-coast cultivars.
Central Pool
And entirely alone. Odd.
Bigger Maze
I told you there were mazes!
More Tall Topiaries
Yeah, I guess I am obsessed.
Flower Tree Again
I like this shot. Too bad I again don't know what it is.
Flower Tree Again, II
It's a common refrain.
