Shedd Aquarium - 30 Sep 2006
Before going to Gila's party, Kirby, David and I decided to take a jaunt to the Shedd Aquarium, since it's just down the street from Gila's place. The photography in the aquarium was challenging, and I think that I could use some actual post-production on these shots, but it's about time that I get them up.

Images
Aquarium Entrance
It's a giant crocodile, get it?
Aquarium Signs
I like that there's a blue-tongued skink on there.
Broken Inflatable Crocodile
A cigarette burn? How rude.
Storm Incoming
Hmm, it's looking a little dark...
No Storm Yet
...but not here.
Even Darker
Okay, we're about to get rained on.
Rain Begins
We managed to get into the aquarium *just* as the water started coming down. Go us.
Fish
The first pictures I got were of the main tank.
Main Tank
It was dark, and I wasn't allowed to use the flash.
Cownose Ray
But some shots came through anyway.
Yellow Fish
Eventually, I started to get the hang of what I needed to do to get some decent shots.
Cownose Ray, II
They're not perfect, but they're okay.
Moray Eel
As I've probably mentioned before, I need to run these through some post-processing software.
Cownose Ray, III
Just brightening them up would do wonders...
Moray Eel, II
For now, at least some of the colors show up well.
More Big Fish
And the shapes, as long as you don't mind the focus.
Piranha
I think we had moved onto another tank by this point.
Small Fish
Or at least, these weren't in the main tank...
Small Fish, II
What reflection was that? Odd.
Lungfish
It was too dark to get pictures of their labels, at least if I expected to read them...
Pike
So instead, I have to guess at the labels.
More Fish
Definitely needs brightening, but otherwise looks pretty good.
Chameleon
There we go, an animal that was already lit!
Pre-Lit Enclosure
A couple of small fish varieties looked pretty good here.
More Lizards
Gaah! Why didn't I get a picture of the label?
Goldfish
Well, they're probably not, but they look like it.
Snapping Turtle
It looks like debris. I wouldn't mess with it.
Second Snapping Turtle
Isn't that cute?
Second Snapping Turtle, II
Well, it was cute until it opened its mouth.
Otter
Sea mammals are so *cute*!
Asian Carp Zapper
Or at least an explanation of how we're keeping them out of Lake Michigan for a while.
Asian Carp
They're apparently tasty, and dangerous.
Asian Carp, II
Or at least I think it's still an Asian Carp.
Sea Dragon
I really tried to get some decent pictures of these guys.
Sea Dragon, II
They're detailed, and flashes aren't allowed...
Sea Dragon, III
...but I think I did a fairly good job of it.
Sea Dragon, IV
They're really careful to keep people from using flashes.
Sea Dragon, V
I'm not sure what it is about them that would be damaged, but given how fragile they look, I'm sure it couldn't be good for them.
Protected by CITES
I don't think it's the same CITES that I know and love.
Another Sea Dragon
I hadn't noticed that there were two tanks.
Old Fish
Aah, dinosaur-age fish!
Crab
That's a big crab. (And pretty.)
Upside-Down Jellyfish
These pictures turned out pretty well.
Upside-Down Jellyfish, II
I think I got their whole breathing process...
Upside-Down Jellyfish, III
And there's even some fine detail there. Go me!
Clownfish
Hiding in the back there. Again, I need to touch up the colors.
Bioluminescence
Now *these* jellyfish were cool.
Bioluminescence, II
And really, really difficult to photograph.
Goldfish-Like
More big fish. I'm not sure when we changed sections again.
Multiple Fish
I guess we didn't change that much.
Red Fish
Blue fish?
Turtle
Not so dangerous looking, this one.
Tree Python
I think the camouflage still comes through.
Big Snake
It was fake, though.
Real Big Snake
Unlike this python...
Big Snake Climbing, I
This snake decided that it wanted to climb up its cage.
Big Snake Climbing, II
Pythons are *big*, you see.
Big Snake Climbing, III
It was pretty neat seeing just how big they were, as it climbed up the glass...
Big Snake Climbing, IV
With my hand, for scale.
Big Snake Climbing, V
Is he going to make it out...
Big Snake Falling
...I guess not.
Big Snake Falling, II
Poor guy, everyone was laughing at him for his failure. *pats the python*
Poison Tree Frogs
Look at those little yellow deadly things, aren't they CUTE?
A Bird
It turned out well, even if I couldn't identify it.
Tiny Fish
The last fish picture I got on the way out of the aquarium.
Segway Tours
I hadn't seen this before - tours of Chicago on Segways. Interesting.
Segway Tours, II
They were too expensive for me, though.
FA:IL
That's an interesting fail state.
