Tracy Arm - 30 May 2007
On the way up to Skagway, the ship went through Tracy Arm, a gorgeous fjord in the middle of glacier territory. The run through took about four hours starting too early in the morning, and while I slept through the first half or so, the second half was absolutely gorgeous. It was like a cold Milford Sound (a fjord in New Zealand that I saw, and didn't properly appreciate, when I was a kid).

Images
Behind the ship
This is what I woke up to when I walked out of our room in the morning.
Blue Ice
Chunks of glacier were scattered liberally through the waters.
Mountains
And all around us were gorgeous mountains and waterfalls.
Pockmarked Ice
Obviously, this stuff wouldn't hold up to the oceans for long.
Fresh Ice
But it was at least holding up for now, to look like very small icebergs.
Golden Princess, I
I had actually been awakened by the warning that we were going to pass our sister ship, the Golden Princess.
Golden Princess, II
This was really the closest I could get to getting decent full-ship pictures of our own ship.
Golden Princess, III
If nothing else, where was a gorgeous background to the ship here, unlike when I could get pictures in port.
Golden Princess and Tracy Arm
Some perspective seems like it might be nice, to show off where we were and how big it was...
Golden Princess, Close-Up
You can see that the other ship was full of people thinking "let's cheer across the water!".
Golden Princess, Close-Up II
Our ship was the same way, of course.
Golden Princess Decks
This gives a pretty good idea of how many cabins they have on our ships, too.
Waterfalls
There were waterfalls all over the place, from the melting glaciers.
More Mountains
I'm probably going to run out of things to say.
Mountains and Ice
But man, the pictures are gorgeous...
Ice in the Water
So it'd really be a shame to cut too many of these.
Mountains, Again
I'll try to at least trim out the empty shots.
Sinking Iceberg
This one isn't going to last too much longer.
Far-Away Trees
By this point, I had pulled out the big lens.
Far-Away Trees, II
It seemed like a fun thing to experiment with, at least.
More Ice
If you're wondering, I got a bunch of these ice pictures for a reason.
Large Blue Ice
Kirby, who I had borrowed the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, asked for only one thing in exchange:
Large Blue Ice, II
Take pictures of blue ice.
Large Blue Ice, III
The least I could do was oblige him.
Fog Valley
The fog usually screwed up shots, but this time, it added something to the scene.
Waterfall
The temporary waterfalls were just awe-inspiring.
Waterfall, Top
The sources looked like actual rivers.
Waterfall, Bottom
...but the bottom didn't as much. Nothing was planned, and the ravines were fairly new.
Waterfall, Total
And it would all be gone in a few weeks.
Waterfall, Total II
Temporary beauty is often more enchanting than the permanent kind.
Ice and Waves
For some reason, I got involved in watching this one get hit by the waves from our ship.
Ice and Waves, II
The ice was being rapidly worn away as it was, but add in the wake from our ship, and its time was short.
Ice and Waves, III
But it held on, and you could see why it would survive for days or weeks.
Ice and Waves, IV
*insert poetic imagery here*
Ice and Waves, V
It's times like this that I wish I had a video camera.
Ice and Waves, VI
Of course, then I realize that nobody would look at them again, including myself... photos are so much easier!
Horizon of Ice
Chunks of it everywhere.
More Blue Ice
Yeah, I really am running out of things to say about it. It's a cool shape, at least.
Background Waterfall
I like the effect of it behind the other mountain.
Fog, Ice, and Mountains
This is what we saw a lot of on the trip through.
Different Blues
Shiny blue and white-blue! Different! Whoo!
Another Waterfall
On the way back out, I had to check out one more waterfall.
''Just Married'' Balloons
Beth didn't let these stay up for long.
More Mountains
I'm glad these pictures turned out well.
Yet More Mountains
They don't quite get the whole majesty of the place...
Mountains Alone
...but they help get the idea across, mostly through their variety.
Last Mountains
This is the kind of stuff that wouldn't show up in most media, but since it's an album and the thumbnails come together, you can kindof see the overall effect and how much there was to see, even without it really being all around you. It's a good start.
Beth at Tracy Arm
And I'm glad I got to spend at least a few minutes of it with my love.
