Seattle Aquarium - 24 May 2007
Visiting the Seattle Aquarium had been one of the highlights of our previous trip to Seattle, so it seemed natural to go once again. The main difference this time was in timing - not only was a good portion of the place closed for repairs, but there were also millions of little children running around on a field trip. It made the whole thing far more stressful. Kudos to the facility staff, though, for giving me some spare batteries so I could take flash pictures of their animals!

Images
Sculpture
Just outside the aquarium was this odd thing. It deserved a shot.
Sea Otter Underwater
The first thing we saw as we came in were the glorious sea otters!
Sea Otter Backside
It was hard to get pictures of this guy, though I did better than last time.
Feeding the Otters
They seemed pretty happy about it, too.
Hungry Otter
How do you like those teeth?
Hungry Otter, II
Munch munch...
Expectant Otter
"What more do you have?"
Octopus
I didn't have a proper flash at this point, which was annoying, because it was feeding time.
Kids at the Octopus
I won't confirm or deny rumors that I suggested feeding the octopi one of the kids, chosen by lottery based on grades.
Feeding the Octopus
For whatever reason, they were feeding him mozzerella cheese that day.
Fed Octopus
But she turned red after eating it, so she was content enough.
Fed Octopus, II
Only one kid's hair in the way!
Rockfish
I think that's what it was, anyway. The reflection didn't help.
Flatfish
After escaping the children and getting batteries, we checked out the natural-light fish.
Bird
Aquarium birds probably lead good lives. So much food! Too bad we don't know what they are.
Another Bird
Happy enough where he is, I guess.
Yet Another Bird
Same species as the first one, but drinking something this time. Yes, this isn't a good description.
More Anenomes
The water wasn't that clear, though.
Puffin
Not the greatest shot, but the best I could get through the wet glass.
Swimming Salmon
Going upsteam in a water-tunnel. Whee.
Overhead Fish
This was a spectacular place for a picture.
Overhead Fish, II
There were thousands of fish, with the sunlight streaming in...
Overhead Fish, III
Even the close-ups show the numbers.
Overhead Fish, IV
I can see why the fishermen do well up here. Go salmon!
Anenome and Fish
I just like the two subjects here.
Anenome Close-Up
Another anenome, looking pretty awesome.
Seal Close-Up
I was shooting this through a chain-link fence, and it turned out pretty well for that.
Seal, Not-So-Close
Eventually the fence started coming into play, but at least you can see the seal.
More Seal
It looks better in the thumbnail views, really.
Seal Through the Fence
But I got his face this time!
Seal Through the Fence, II
Beth was freaked out by the now-hidden beady eyes.
Resting Otter
When we came back to these guys, they were floating on their backs cutely!
Resting Otter, II
What a wonderful picture-taking opportunity!
Resting Otter, III
I think he was grooming himself here.
Resting Otter #2
There was more than one otter doing it, too.
Two Resting Otters
And they ran into each other like driftwood!
Cute Otter
I feel like I should caption this with something involving an invisible bucket.
Cute Otter, II
That'd probably just make me lame, though.
Two Resting Otters, Close-Up
See? They're holding hands!
Still Resting Otter
I think they probably lay like that for hours a day. It's a good life.
Swimming Seal, I
I like how cruel his mouth looks here.
Swimming Seal, II
I'm also glad that we got some pictures of him to turn out.
Swimming Seal, III
None of the other seals' pictures came out at all. Oh well.
