Sean and Sarah's Wedding - 26 Apr 2008

Sean and Sarah, two of my closest college friends, started dating in 1997. It was fun watching their relationship begin, and grow, and stay solid for year after year; and our friends quietly speculated for years about when they would finally tie the knot. Well, the day finally came in April 2008, and I was truly honored to get to be there to watch, laugh, and generally carry on as we celebrated a couple that deserve it more than anyone. (Oh, and the dancing was fun too.)

Images
Nice in our Outfits
Ray, Mel and I had spent the day wandering the city, and it was fun!
The Other Outfit Part
Okay, so I hadn't gotten my proper shoes yet.
Jimpy and Jen
So many friends! Too bad not all of them are in focus.
Sneaking a Shot
I was able to get a picture in of Sean before the wedding began. I think that's Officially Sneaky.
Valerie
If you give people time to think, you don't get shots like this.
Andrew on the Piano
I hadn't really been expecting him to play, but it made perfect sense, and he did an excellent job.
Early Guests
I should have sat closer...
Early Guests, II
...but I stayed as far back as the third row. Silly me.
Early Guests, III
Eventually the audience figured out that I was taking pictures. Or at least Nicole and Michelle did.
The Screen
The backdrop for the ceremony was removable, since the reception was going to take part right afterwards.
DJ Setup
Hidden behind the screen. That rarely stops me.
The Photographer
Yay, he uses Canon!
The Judge
He certainly looks the part, anyway.
Procession Begins
Nobody takes shots of the audience enough.
Sean Enters
It was a different order. I like it.
Sean's Side
Sean, Terry, and Karrie; Andrew was still playing the piano.
John and Ruth
Brother and Mother of the bride.
Rosemary
Sarah's younger sister was one of the bridesmaids.
Meryl
Her older sister was the other.
Angie
And Angie was the maid of honor.
Angie, Close-Up
I need a faster flash so I can get more pictures at times like this.
Enter the Bride
The standard fashion is to speak well of the bride's outfit...
Enter the Bride, II
...but in this case, it was a foregone conclusion.
Enter the Bride, III
At least the flash let me take a few good pictures of Sarah's procession.
Proud Friends
The smiles on Meryl and Angie's faces speak volumes.
Andrew
He eventually got to stand up for the actual ceremony.
The Couple
They gave each other intent looks through most of the ceremony.
Sarah's Look
It was...honest. And wonderful.
Bridesmaids
But they couldn't do the staring-into-partner's-eyes bit, at least not on stage.
More Staring
I couldn't really take good pictures of Sean's face from this angle, but I tried.
Smiling Sarah
Of course, it wasn't *all* serious.
The Hands
And so the vows began.
Staring Couple
It generally came back to this.
Rachel's Reading
Rachel read the first poem of the night.
Rachel's Reading, II
I really wish she'd gone with the "Gilligan's Island" scantion.
Reading and Couple
They remained intent during the reading. I'm not
John's Reading
Sarah's brother did the second reading.
Back to Staring
This was truly serious business for this couple.
Two Smiles
Even at a non-optimal angle, I could occasionally see Sean's smile of joy.
Sarah's Smile
It says "this is real" to me.
Ring Time
Sean put hers onto Sarah first...
Ring Time, II
...and it went without a hitch.
Ring Time, III
This wasn't so much true in the other direction. They got it eventually, though!
Smiling Couple
The amusement at the difficulty of putting a ring on Sean's finger was the catalyst for this wonderful picture.
''I Do.''
I got her actually saying it.
''You May Kiss The Bride.''
Well, that wasn't exactly what he said. But close enough.
The Kiss
It was a good kiss.
Departure
And so the couple went out, and were never seen again.
Departure, II
Or at least not for a half hour or so.
Terry and Angie
Their backs, anyway. I didn't do a great job with these pictures.
Sarah's Parents
See, that's better! And they're proud.
Ingrida's Foot
She knew what was truly excting about this wedding - discovering interesting body parts!
Valerie and Ingrida
Yes, our friends have entered the reproduction stage of life.
Post-Wedding Mingling
I recognize Toly and Caitte in the back!
Toly and Sonia
This was only the second time I'd met Sonia, and I still approve.
Wedding Cake
They were kind to me, and had some non-chocolate in there. Yay!
Family Table
I like that this table was later used for my friends.
More Mingling
Mingle mingle mingle...
Rachel and Anand
The whole point of weddings, from our perspective, is to get friends together. And that we did!
Picture Vat
This was the most personal touch at the wedding - a localized recreation of their Picture Wall. I was impressed, and moved on. But, well, I'm smiling as I write this up, so I guess it made its impact...
Preparing for Eating
I didn't take pictures of all of the steps between the wedding and the reception, but at least there were a few.
Eva and Andrew
Eva finally bought a digital camera! And so she needed to get some shots of Andrew. Shocking.
More Mingling
The only people in focus are the ones in the back. Oops.
Laura
It really was good to hear from her. It had been a while!
Hors d'ouvres
There was no regular dinner, instead there were tasty things.
The Couple Arrives
There wasn't a formal receiving line, but this was similar.
Proud Sean
Yep, you did good!
Couple Close-Up
The rest of the world was proud of them, too.
Bwang
Yes, Brian came as well!
Talking with Gautham
Sean and Sarah did a good job of smoozing with everyone - starting with Sean's old roommate.
Andrew's Camera
He took a picture of me, and me of him. That's always fun!
Sarah
Happy amongst friends and family.
Sarah's Engagement Ring
She hung it on a necklace on her back. I hadn't seen anything like that before. I liked it.
Posing with Friends
I recognize Siri, but not the other girl. Oh, and the one in the middle? That's Sarah!
Not Spilling
Or at least I hope he didn't spill on his tux.
A Happy Group
None of which I know. Oh well, they get their picture up anyway!
Backs of Friends
This would probably have been taken out, except that Nicole used it to illustrate the back of her cardigan. I guess I must be helpful!
Gautham, Anand, and Shruti
I knew it was just a matter of time until somebody got me her name! I really should have talked with her at some point, too...
Laden with Children
Val had to head off and be a good mommy for a bit.
Randall
An interesting profile, with Caitte standing behind.
Caitte
Okay, this picture wasn't so great. Too bad.
Sandwiches
Blessed, blessed food! Of course, when I tried to touch it I got chased away by the caterers, with an extra insinuation that I was a paid photographer... That was amusing, actually.
Anand, Eva, and Gautham
The inseparable trio.
Happy DJ
He was a friend of the family, and his gift was the DJing.
Sleepy Baby
Ingrida was having a good time on her Mom's back.
Rachel and Tom
Tom seemed pretty cool.
Best Man Speech
Terry eventually had to get everyone's attention to start the "speech" part of the evening.
Best Man Speech, II
Certainly, it was very heart-felt.
Hanging Candles
Please do not let the fact that I spotted these candles during Terry's speech indicate to you that I didn't like the speech. It was very good!
Listening Couple
What's really important, though, is that it made *them* think.
Maid of Honor Speech
Angie did a good job too, but I managed to mess up the lighting somehow so the pictures don't reflect it.
Maid of Honor Speech, II
But it was just as heartfelt, and perhaps a bit more heartwrenching.
Humble Friends
And I believe that Sean and Sarah were proud and humble in response to their friends.
''I give you my best friend.''
And she meant it.
Two Reactions
Sarah: "awwww..." Sean: "Mwahaha, she's my best friend now!" (Or maybe I made that up entirely.)
Watching the Toasting
The audience liked it all too, it seems.
Sean's Parents' Toast
Okay, I have less to say about parental toasts in general.
Post-Toast Kiss
It's always an honor to be in the presence of such love.
More Watching
The audience pictures continue to fascinate me and be almost impossible to label.
Sarah's Parents' Toast
I like how Sarah looks shocked. Yay, Dads!
Hugging Dad
It's rare to see others that like their parents. I like it.
Couple's Toast
They did one themselves, too.
Couple's Toast, II
It offered some good portrait possibilities.
Couple's Toast, III
Mostly, though, it was good to hear the important sentiment: "hooray for friends!".
Another Kiss
There were a lot of these. Shocking, neh?
Cutting the Cake
This went off without much ceremony, but I got some pictures anyway.
Cutting the Cake, II
It wasn't all chocolate, as I feared. Hooray!
Sean and Caitte
With Sarah in the foreground. An odd shot.
Toly and Sonia and a Vase
Okay, I really wanted to see if the vase would add anything. It didn't.
First Dance
So proud, so intent, so... so much my friends.
Talking During the Dance
I got a lot of good shots of them during this, based on the idea that they're the same friends they always have been.
First Dance, II
Some people worry about friends getting married.
First Dance, III
It hasn't hurt any of my friendships yet!
First Dance, IV
But it sure has made me proud every time.
First Dance, V
It's always tricky to figure out which ones to drop from this kind of thing...
First Dance, VI
...but I like a lot of them, and I don't want to cut things back for Sean and Sarah.
First Dance, VII
So, as usual, I'll just leave too many shots of essentially the same nifty thing in.
Photography
Taking pictures of the dancing? How tasteless!
Friendly Waiting
Can you tell that Karrie was having a good time?
Mel
Waiting for a drink, and happy to actually smile for the camera this time.
Mother-Son Dance
She looked proud to me.
More Photography
Taking pictures of the dancing son, apparently.
Waiting for her Husband
Patience, my friend, patience...
Angie and Stefan
Happy and relaxed after the main parts were over.
Jimpy
Just seeing what's happening on the other side of the room.
Anand Notices
Anand must have spotted the flash. Somehow.
Daddy-Daughter Dance
She was proud, he was proud. That's what this particular event is for.
Daddy-Daughter Dance, II
I'm curious as to what was said here to get that facial expression.
Daddy-Daughter Dance, III
He got over it eventually.
More Photographs
Andrew was definitely doing his part!
Ray, Mel, Randall, and Caitte
Two sisters and two brothers-in-law. I love my friends!
Sonia and Toly
That's a really good picture of Sonia.
Wedding Party Dance
Or setting up for it, anyway.
Wedding Party Dance, II
Was it some kind of ancient dance?
Watching the Dancing
Or talking amongst themselves, it's almost as if there was a lot to catch up with...
Wedding Party Dance, III
There tehy go, shaking their things. (Thangs?)
Stefan and Angie Dancing
They really are an adorable couple, and happy to have their son being taken care of by Matas for a few minutes.
General Dancing Begins
And out go the rest of the people!
The Museum
This all took place in the Swedish-American Museum; so I figured that I ought to take at least a couple of shots of the museum bits.
Wall of Honor
I think these were families that moved from Sweden. I don't know; I was distracted.
Val Playing
The kids eventually all made it up to the children's section of the museum.
Matas
Matas gamely played with the children while his wife played downstairs. That was reallly kind of him!
Back to Dancing
Okay, the upstairs time over, it's time to get back to work!
Bwang Archetype
With a strawberry and a smirk.
The Dancing
I took very few pictures of this, because, well, I was out dancing myself most of the time.
On Gautham's Lap
I think the plan was originally to just have Sarah pose, but he was Sean's roommate, so...
On Gautham's Lap, II
It's cuter when they're both on him.
On Gautham's Lap, III
Wait, where'd Gautham go?
The Couple at a Low Angle
I was grumped at for taking this picture, but it turned out really well!
Gautham and Eva
I'm really happy that Gautham has re-entered our social group. We missed him!
Laura
Acting protective, or posing for a portrait, it's hard to tell.
Tim
At least there was one proper picture of me taken on my camera. Hopefully some more pictures will follow!
Eva and Laura
The portrait phase realy should have gone on for longer.
Caitte and Randall
It's always a pleasure to see those two.
Caitte and Laura
Speech Geeks forever!
Siri
This is the woman I danced with all night. It's been a while since I've had such a self-esteem boost.
After-Party
We were out until 3am... and it hurt, but it was good! (Siri, Gautham, Laura, Eva, Andrew, Ray, Mel, Toly, Nicole, Val, Anand, Randall, Caitte)
