James & Jeanie's Wedding - Reception

By the time the reception had rolled around, I had run into the problem of running out of film. Oops! So the picture size got turned down to "medium", and we went from there. It was a quite long reception, but also quite interesting, especially the additional Vietnamese wedding ceremony in the middle of it... I again got a lot of pictures, and this time they're probably distinctly different than most of what the actual photographer got.

Images
''Members Only''
We didn't get to go into the second floor.
Reception Begins
Can you tell that we got in a bit late?
Head Table Shots
Jeanie, James and Chuck sit and wait for the signal to go get our food.
Pud Table
James' old friends, the Puds, got to sit together.
Karen and Seth
He was saying something odd, I'm sure.
Lame Bunny Ears
Caitte, I'm sorry to say that you weren't giving bunny ears to anybody at that angle.
Dinner Line
The waiting for food has begun! (And nobody told me).
Allen Dinner Line
Around now was when I figured out that I should have been in line a while ago.
Punch Fountain
But I still had to get a shot of this marvel of modern engineering. Or whatever you want to call it.
Family Table
Old family pictures and memories.
Memory Table
This was for the departed family members, it seems; plus, it served a major role at the upcoming Vietnamese ceremony.
Cake
I was happy to discover that there were ~4 varieties of cake mixed into there.
Chocolate Fountain Setup
It made up for the flowing poison on just the next table.
A Completed Table
I figured it was worthwhile to get a shot of what they finally looked like.
DJ Table
"DJ Rebel". ROCK!
Jeanie and Bears
Beanie Babies for Jeanie.
Flower Arrangement
It was on our front table; it needed at least one picture.
Banners
These were just behind our table.
Chuck and DJ Rebel
Discussing when he needed to use the mic. (You can tell that he's getting tired.)
Full Reception Hall
Behold! There are a lot of people!
Chuck Announcement
Basically, instead of the "chime your glasses to make the couple kiss" thing, they went for "sing a song with the words 'love', 'kiss', 'James', or 'Jeanie' in it".
Singing Table
Of course, the Allenites came up with "James and Jeanie sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!".
Kissing Couple
That's four kisses! Muahaha...
Ben and Isabelle
"Now don't you go taking pictures of my daughter!"
Isabelle
Defintiely a cutie.
Gift Table
They had a fair bit of loot, I'd say.
Bohall Table
James' Aunts and Uncles all sat together, right next to our table. I don't think they came up with a song. (Represtented are Washington State, Washington DC, Massachusetts, and Illinois)
Visiting the Pud Table
Their first stop at visiting tables was to the Pud table. This didn't surprise me much.
Chuck, High-Up
Setting up for later things. He didn't really rest for days afterwards.
Chocolate Fountain Begins
Oh well. At least I got to eat some of the strawberries.
Dancing Kids
The little kids were having a ball.
Lighting Candles
What she was doing work was beyond me...but at least she was doing with James, and they were together.
Lighting Candles Together
According to Chuck, they were doing this so that they would know which tables they'd visited. Good idea!
Buffet Line
It was worth getting at least one shot of the Vietnamese buffet.
Eva and Darren Eating
Yeah, eating things with *chocolate* on them! Ick!
Laura
I don't see her enough lately.
Tim and Eva
I don't see Eva enough either...really, I don't see any of my friends enough.
Best-Man's Speech
Chuck's speech went over *extremely* well.
Maid-Of-Honor's Speech
Trinh's went over well too, but it wasn't quite as sappy...
Jeanie's Speech
Jeanie's speech was also sweet, though perhaps a bit longer than the other two put together.
James, Jeanie and Eva
James was getting quite good at his sincere smiles by this point.
First Dance Preparations
Getting ready to dance the first time...
First Dance
..and the two of them bounce up and down for a while!
First Dance, II
Hehe! It was so James...
First Dance, Part 2
They eventually settled down into a normal dance.
First Dance 2.1
She looks like she's about to cry.
First Dance 2.2
And that's definitely out of joy...
First Dance 2.3
It's really fun to watch these things.
First Dance 2.4
Plus, I got to see James spin a girl!
First Dance 2.5
I'm really happy for him, you know.
Daddy-Daughter Dance
He's a proud father, obviously.
Daddy-Daughter Dance, II
It's really easy to say that kind of thing at weddings, in my experience.
Daddy-Daughter Dance, III
Perhaps it's just because I haven't been to one that left recriminations...
Daddy-Daughter Dance, IV
But still, it's so nice to see the family proud, and the kids happy with that pride.
Daddy-Daughter Dance, V
I...oh, gotta interrupt the reverie. Spins!
Daddy-Daughter Dance, VI
His spinning-smile is infectious.
Waiting on the Side Lines
Is he waiting for Jeanie, or to dance with his mother?
Waiting Kids
I think they just want to be able to dance again.
Mother-Son Dance
I wasn't shocked to hear them dance to "The Rainbow Connection".
Mother-Son Dance, II
I like how proud James looks in this picture...
Mother-Son Dance, III
...and how proud Mary Jane is here.
Mother-Son Dance, IV
They were good parents to him.
Mother-Son Dance, V
And they'll all stay in touch, which is nice to know.
Couples Dance
And here's the part where I get to dance with Angie.
Couples Dance, II
Well, it was a slow dance for a bit, anyway.
Couples Dance 2.1
Before it turned into "Kung-Fu Fighting!"
Couples Dance 2.2
It was a good twist, I didn't expect it, and it again matched James well. It's good to see that he got input.
Bouquet Toss
Time to prepare for the real point of weddings... propagation!
Bouquet Toss, II
No, not *that* kind of propagation!
Gesturing for the Bouquet
"Go long!"
Preparing to Catch
Wait for it... (I like how Beth is far in the back, and is looking at me and not the bouquet.)
Catching the Bouquet
...and it's the girl in pink on the right!
Bouquet Catcher
I have no idea what her name was, but she was content.
More Dancing Children
It didn't take long for them to return to the floor, did it?
Preparing for the Garter
The balcony was helpful for this, I must admit.
Caught the Garter
And a 12-year-old kid got it. Heh. We're all safe...
Garter Catcher
I liked it on his head.
Bear Toss
Toss #3 was some stuffed animals, so nobody would feel left out.
Bear Tossers
James looks...amused.
Bear Catchers
The kids were psyched, certainly.
Darren and Laura Dancing
Darren is good at this. Laura griped later that she couldn't keep up...
Bruce with Purse
Doesn't he look happy to be holding onto something so important?
Regular Dancing
And so the standard dancing begins, at least for a little while.
Vietnamese Ceremony Preparations
Since Jeanie is Vietnamese, it seemed logical to have a cultural ceremony as well.
Vietnamese Ceremony Begins
Of course, this doesn't mean they told us what was going on.
Kids in Ceremonial Vietnamese Outfits
So I have to make stuff up like "ceremonial outfits". They looked cool, but I wasn't really sure what the meaning was.
Brining the Offerings
I know that offerings came in under red sheets that I'd gotten scolded for touching earlier.
The Offerings
Chuck got to carry one, which means that it was for the whole family and not just the immediate one.
A Gift
Bruce and Mary Jane brought a rectangular box.
Gifts with the Bridesmaids
The bridesmaids got to hold the collection of stuff; the groomsmen weren't involved in the process. (Probably because our clothing was American traditional.)
Leaving the Gift
An offering to the ancestors? Perhaps.
Candlesticks
The gifts were candlesticks. Okay.
Lighting the Candles
James' grandparents lit the candles.
Lighting the Candles, II
Note: they are quite large candles.
Placing the Candles
The mothers got to actually place the candles in the holders...
Placing the Candles, II
...which wasn't as easy as it looked, because of the balance.
Mary Jane
I think she liked her dress. Just a guess.
Honoring the Ancestors
Now, Jeanie's mother did some ancestor-honoring ceremony.
Honoring the Ancestors, II
Again, that's just what it looked like, so don't get angry at me if I'm far off-base...
Holding the Candle
There was a good reason for this: just before, the candle had fallen to the ground and scorched the table. (You may note that there were no pictures of this; I also dove to stop the fire).
Holding the Candles
So, from here on in, we had the candles held up specifically by participants...
Retrieving the New Couple
James and Jeanie had been behind this whole time.
James and Jeanie Procession
And so now they come with an offering too. (And new outfits. I like the new outfit on James.)
Offerings from the Couple
Everything is out...
Offerings from the Couple, II
...and they offer their respects.
Waiting for the Next Step
I couldn't tell you what James and Jeanie are thinking about here.
Next Step Explained
It looks like Jeanie's mother knows, though.
Acknowledgement
It's odd to be noticed during the ceremony.
Explanations
At this point, Trung took over explaining what was going on... and I still didn't get it.
Jewelry
A beautiful bracelet, presumably an heirloom, was put onto Jeanie's arm.
More Jewelry
I'd have to guess it's considered "a gift from the ancestors". But again, I'm only guessing.
Drinks for the Family
At this point, they opened a bottle of sparkling grape juice for James' grandparents.
Guarding the Candles
There will be no more fires on their watch!
Pouring the Drinks
Next, the couple pours drinks for their families.
More Pouring
I like how Trinh was still working on her dress during all of this. (According to Chuck, the dress adjustments were symbolic. Neat!)
Drinks for Family
The drinks are distributed...
Waiting for More Drinks
Does anybody else need anything? (This gives an excellent overview of how many people were watching this.)
Words from the Grandparents
James' grandfather gives his blessings.
Listening to the Grandparents
James and Jeanie watch on.
Looking To Each Other
And then they look at each other, contentedly.
Smiling at the Ceremony
And so, it appears to be done.
Chuck and the Candle
No more fire for us!
Vietnamese Dancing
It looked fairly similar to the other dancing.
Vietnamese Dancing, II
Especially in as much as they looked just as happy.
More Dancing
James' parents danced too...
Even More Dancing
...as did Jeanie's parents.
Three Couples
The three couples danced on, together.
Add a Fourth Couple
And then James' grandaparents entered the mix.
The Center of Attention
They were the importance ones, still, through the dancing...
Center of Attention, II
I don't really know how much of the thing was ceremony.
Center of Attention, III
I do know that they really do love each other, and that it was good to see it honored.
Center of Attention, IV
Congratulations again, my friends.
Post-Dancing Waiting
Preparing for the next part of the ceremonies.
Standing Before the Cake
And back to an American tradition: the ludicrous-sized cake!
Little Cake People
Aww...
Caitte and Sam
Just before we got called away to scoop ice cream, which is more work than you'd expect.
Cutting the Cake
I missed most of this, because I was busy scooping ice cream; so you can thank Beth for getting some shots of it.
Eva
Yup. Still Eva.
Caitte
Just a bit too close-up.
Caitte
This shot, though... I like it.
Fred, Caitte and James
Perhaps it's an odd combination, but it's amusing to see.
DB and Raché Take Off
Back to take care of their son, I'd guess.
First Piece
First something is cut out...
The Smearing
...then it's stuffed on the others' face...
Back to Cutting:...t..O tempora, o mores!) More Smearing
At least they're trying to get it in each others' mouths.
Cake is Cut...now what?
I guess it's time to go eat something.
Caitte and the Chocolate Fountain
I think she's going to do this to torture me.
Caitte and the Chocolate Strawberry
No Caitte, don't do it!
Caitte and the Chocolate Strawberry, II
NOO!!!!
Caitte and the Chocolate Marshmallow
Yes, I dislike chocolate, how'd you guess?
Eva, Laura, and Caitte
I look forward to looking back at this picture in 20 years and just remembering what we all used to look like.
Still Cutting the Cake
There were a lot of layers!
Eva with Rose
I do like the shorter hair, I must admit.
Darren
Pensive? Distracted? You decide.
Tim and Ice Cream
Scooping that ice cream *sucked*!
Receiving Line
Many hours later, we finally had the long-requested receiving line.
After the Second Ceremony
The parents are, I think, just happy that things are starting to wind down.
Kids On Top
Once they knew there was a balcony, we were all doomed.
Tim with Apron
It took me a while to realize I could take the apron back off after the ice cream incident.
Tim and Caitte, I
I was so happy to have my sister around...
Tim and Caitte, II
I really don't get to see her enough.
Tim and Caitte, III
But at least we can always be goofy together.
Caitte with Shawl
She's pretty good at looking goofy on her own, too.
Tim and Beth
Is it bad that I start feeling all goofy when I try to write this label?
Tim and Beth, II
Gods, I love my Beth.
More Pictures
By this point, even I was getting sick of pictures. Or at least of posing.
Seth Chiles
He's grumpy that his name comes up so easily on Google now.
Adam and Laura
Having a good time with the Table Of Puds.
Karen
I think it's about impossible to get a shot of her with her eyes open.
James, Tim and Caitte
Old roommates, together for good events.
James, Tim and Caitte
Hooray for old friends. *tips cup of water that I'm currently drinking from*
Preparing Allen Crowd Pictures
There's an arm in the way, but the shot of Sam and Eva is quite good.
Allen Crowd
By comparison, this shot is a bit dark...
Allen Portrait
And this is much better, even if we're a bit too shiny. (Seth, Adam, Darren; Tim, Chuck, Sam, Eva)
Back to Dancing
The dancing had actually begun again while we were taking the pictures amongst ourselves.
Break-Dancing Kid
The break-dancing kid had never really stopped, though.
Caitte and Beth Dancing
It's good to see Beth up on the floor dancing.
Cowboy Caitte
Yes, she's learned to dance in odd ways.
Spinning Dancing
Beth went back to get some shots of me, Eva, Laura, and Caitte dancing.
Tim Dancing
It's just nice to be on the floor with my friends, you know...
More Tim Dancing
And to carry on like a fool. But mostly to be with my friends.
Bridesmaids on Tables
You can tell there was an open bar, can't you?
Sam the Pirate
Yaar!!
Sam the Pirate, II
This time, missing an eye.
Hula Hoops
At some point, the DJs brought out a bunch of these things.
Departing Couple
With this, James and Jeanie got to take off.
Car Vandalism
It's part of the tradition, but we aren't very good at it.
Car Vandalism, II
There's something sweet about the way we think that makes us put "42" on a car as vandalism.
Car Vandalism, III
Its more horrifying that we did it twice.
Car Vandalism, IV
An obligatory number of tins.
Post-Wedding Brunch
The next morning, we went across the street for brunch with the rest of the wedding party.
Ugly Lamp
I gotta say, I didn't like this lamp much.
Actual Brunch
But the food was good, the place was easy to find, and it was good to see everybody one last time.
Couple's First Meal
Well, maybe not their first. But at least it was fairly normal...
