GenCon 2007 - 17-20 Aug 2007
For some reason, until 2007 I never actually went to GenCon, an annual gaming convention that takes place in Indianapolis (just down the road, it's almost as close as Chicago). I was finally talked into it by Darren this year, and went for a couple of days. It was exhausting, it was fun, and it was just plain good for me. And there were a lot of things to take pictures of, including a lot of fun costumes...

Images
Deer Sculpture
I parked in the garage of the Eiteljorg Museum, which wasn't too far away from the event. This sculpture of dancing deer was just outside of the museum.
Gaming Room
I got to the Con too late for the first day of wandering the dealer floor, but the gaming room was impressive enough.
Batman Sculpture
Before I started playing any games, I got some musing pictures around the rest of the convention center.
Colosseum
I spotted Darren playing this game with Brian and Bryan, and it was the first sign of anybody I knew.
Huge Twilight Imperium
A standard game of Twilight Imperium takes ~8-10 hours. This game was made up of 8 copies of the main game, had 14 players, and... well, I don't know how long it took. But it was impressive!
Connected Twilight Imperium
This was an alternate map for Twilight, where all races were within three hexes of each other. This changed things quite a bit. (I like Twilight, if you couldn't guess.)
Stack'O'Games
That's a lot of games! And they were available to borrow. Whoo!
Gaming Room, Again
I'm just trying to show off a sense of how big this place was.
Arkham Horror
Just a regular game, with the expansions, but it seems fun seeing others playing it.
Battling CosPlayers
Anime all 'round? I think so.
Female Imperials
A stormtrooper and a TIE Pilot. *Excellent* costumes, especially with the required gender-based changes.
Betrayal at House on the Hill
I got to play some games with people that first night...
Betrayal at House on the Hill, II
...and it was fun, even if it was mainly Betrayal.
Clans
Darren, Brian and I played Clans as well, which I didn't quite get but it was at least fun.
Princess Toadstool
As the place started clearing out, I was able to go harass this girl into pulling out her parasol for a picture. (This was probably one of my favorite costumes of the event.)
Random Angel Guy
On the floor the next day were a whole lot more picture opportunities.
Autograph Area
I wasn't really supposed to get pictures here, but I couldn't help myself.
Master Chief
I should have brought out the 50mm lens in the first place, it would have done a better job with this shot.
Booth Babes
Hark, people I know!
Angela and Grace
Two friends were running a booth at the show.
Necropolis Studios
They lived at the Necropolis until lately. Hopefully it doesn't collapse on the new residents.
Starcraft: the Board Game
This was the highlight of the convention for many. Man, those minis rule!
Night Elf Statue
On a pedestal, with a guy kneeling. Go WoW.
Conan Babe
They hired a bunch of models to carry swords and wear leather. It was cute. They felt better when I finally asked for their pictures. (It was a video game section, so I didn't really care that much.)
Barbarian Battles
These guys looked a lot better and were having more fun.
Starcraft II
They had a playable demo of Starcraft II at the show. We are all doomed.
Battletech Map
I should have tried to play out the battle. It looked *excellent*.
Catan Boxed Set
I doubt I'll ever own this, but it's a really nifty set, and at least I can say I've seen one in person.
Munchkin Water
As usual, there were actual rules for it.
Sword Battles
There was a swordfighting area on the floor, which was kindof amusing.
Sword Battles, II
This wasn't really an outfit made for fighting.
Sword Battles, III
Her friend got into the fight too.
Sword Battles, IV
See if you can guess why people were hanging out to watch this one?
Captain Jack
Guys have costumes too!
Anime Figure Collection
No, I didn't want to touch, just be amused by the creepiness.
Tifa
I'm not sure why she was looking so un-enthusiastic. If you're going to go in costume, at least have fun with it!
Batue
I found Darren and Brian trying out this odd wargame. It looks like it might suit me okay, but they weren't that impressed...
Beholder Costume
Very clever. The mobile eyes were a great touch.
Girl and FillerBunny
It amused me to see a girl reading and laughing at FillerBunny, one of the most depraved and funny comics that I can remember. She didn't seem too upset when she figured out why I was taking her picture.
Angel Outfit
The guy was probably something too, but again, I'm not enough up on my anime.
Darth Vader
Leaning down to talk to a kid. Now that's leadership!
Ghostbusters
The proton packs looked nice and heavy.
Naruto Army
Again, I at least *think* it's Naruto.
Magazine Lady
An outfit made out of bits of the program is pretty nifty.
Darren and Starcraft
Darren had to playtest this game too...
Arthur
Or at least I think it's Arthur. The sword makes that less likely.
T-Shirts
I couldn't afford all of them, even though I would have worn them all. Sadly.
Weis Babe
Margaret Weis' booth had the lost scantily clad lady of all. Oddly.
Free-Roaming Fighters
I think they were heading back to their booth, because they looked too professional.
Dropship
It beeped, and it had little aerospace fighters inside! So cute... I want it.
Elves
One Drow, one High Elf. From WoW? Maybe.
AT-ATs
They were doing a full version of the AT-AT attack from Empire Strikes Back with minis, which was pretty cool.
Swinging Spider-Man
Sadly, it was a statue, but he was still connected to the ceiling.
Miscellaneous Costume
After a while it wasn't obvious whether some outfits were even costumes. I think this one was.
Card Towers
This was a cute area, where people sacrificed their Collectible Card Game cards to the greater good of making buildings.
Ninja Clan Showdown
Go Ninjas! (This was some kind of random protest thing, but it was fun to watch.)
Steampunk Outfits
Definitely costumes this time.
Barnes and Thornburg
Only amusing because it was connected to a Borders. I'm sure it had nothing to do with B&N, but it was cute.
Brian
I needed a good shot of him, here it is!
Starcraft Minis
You can kindof see the minis here, and the gameboard layout... I'm glad that Darren's going to pick it up.
Starfleet Battles Board
Behold the complicated game! That's way out of my league...
Indy Lion
The only other picture I got outside during the event.
Pirate Lady
More video game advertising, the flash would have helped here too.
Beholder Box
The coolest item at Angela and Grace's booth, it did sell.
Stilts Guy
He seemed dangerous to me, so I kept my distance.
More Darren Gaming
I don't remember what game he and Brian were playing, but I don't think he picked it up yet.
Mira Furlan
She played Delenn from Babylon 5, and she came to sign stuff. I got to sneak in a picture as she was signing over a picture for me.
World's Biggest Invader Zim Fan
That's what she said, anyway, when she stopped me to ask about my Zim shirt.
