EOH 2007 - 09-10 Mar 2007

Once again, there was a Beckman Open House this year, from 09-10 Mar 2007. I got quite few shots of the proceedings in Beckman, and a few from elsewhere on campus. Of course, now it's almost two months since I promised them to the Beckman staff, so I should really get this done...

Images
BIC Setup
Beckman South is always one of the stars of the show.
Fun with MRI
It's not a real machine, of course, but it still looks cool, and the kids like it.
Bryan and the Immersadesk
Showing off our research in the background.
3D Color Printer
Dean was showing off that most excellent of toys.
3D Color Printer Output
Really, you should try to find one and get a sample print. They're just neat!
In Line for Tickets
CAVE tickets, amongst others, were being given to those that survived the line.
Hank and the Line
He seems to enjoy the whole Open House thing every now and again.
Laser Lab
Lasers make everything better.
Laser Lab, II
This is just down the hall from me, so it was interesting to finally see the inside.
Cafeteria Lunch
Kids in the front, Jim and John in the back.
Immersadesk in Use
This is good, since it was there to show off our research!
ITG Staff
Or at least I think they are. I should know this kind of stuff, but I don't.
Van
Our esteemed Second-In-Command.
BI Staff Lunch
We got free food for wearing the shirts.
BI Staff Lunch, II
There's a lot of Beckman employees, you know.
Pierre the Lecturer
Our director helps out for this event too.
Drunk Basketball
How well can *you* play basketball with impaired vision?
LED Tiled Walls
Becoming higher and higher resolution. Soon you'll be able to play Donkey Kong on your wall!
Waiting
Some day, they'll let him into the CAVE!
Flight Simulator
Well, the smaller one anyway.
Flight Simulator Projector
Oh, Electrohome, what neat toys you make!
To the Microscopes!
Helena stood guard over the microscopes, or at least kept people out of the deserted sections of the building.
Driving Simulator
Yes, there's a car in the basement of BI.
From Above
There really were a lot of people wandering around the Open House, as you can see.
Teaching about Facial Recognition
Or at least that's what I recall it being about. I could be wrong.
Voice Recognition
I like that I actually understood the graphs. It's a rare thing in this building.
Voice Recognition Team
Directly below my machine room lie those that want to better recognize voice sounds.
Back at ITG
Don't touch them, you fool!
PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH
Lots of output from the color 3D printer, again.
Mom playing Basketball
With the drunk goggles. Go Mom!
Mom and Drunk Goggles
Hehe.
3D Parents
Checking out our group's research.
Jack and the Immersadesk
He really wanted to touch the molecules.
Jack in the MRI
Pressing buttons, for some quick experiment. Fun.
Jack and BugScope
It's a lot of fun wandering through EOH with a nine-year-old. He was so excited!
Jack and the Self-Healing Polymers
There should be a series of adventure books about his journey through Beckman.
Newmark Robot
Dana used to work in Newmark, so we figured we had to stop by.
Big Crushing Robots
Those were cool presses, and some cool science behind them. But we'll talk about them another day...
BattleBots 2007
Okay, it had a different name than this, but I don't remember it.
Random Robot
The point was that it was a design competition and face-off.
Random Robot, II
The robots were meant to move hula hoops and frisbees to baskets in different sections of the main arena.
Random Robot, III
So it was competitive, but not really directly so...
Battle Begins
Okay, enough talking - fight!
Battle in Progress
The robots head towards their targets.
Towards the Hoops
First of all, let's pull a hula hoop out of their storage.
Lifting the Hula Hoop
Getting it out of there is the first step...
Successful Lift
...and is worthy of praise on its own!
Another Way
But the frisbees were just as good.
Placing the Hoop
It was all fairly complicated and neat, and it looked better when the lights went out.
Real Battles
At this point, the robots started fighting directly, which I don't think was within the rules.
Fallen Robots
He fell off and onto his back! What an incredible turnaround!
