Beckman + Engineering Open House 2005

There was actually a Beckman Open House this year, from 11-12 Mar 2005. I took a few shots of the proceedings, including what our group was working on.

Images
Beckman Open House
We play separately from everyone else.
EOH Gatherers
There's a lot of people that turn up for these events.
Waiting in Line
The most valuable event of the day, visiting the CAVE, always has lines.
Balloons
They were good and shiny this year, which I appreciated...
3D Printer Items
The non-pamphlet, non-projector items were printed on the building's 3D printer. It's a cool device.
Elevator Sign
It's doing a good job of hiding the fact that the elevator has been broken for months.
TCB Sign
Showing the direction to our own presentations.
TCB Computer Setup
We're still pretty proud of getting all of the monitors working in this downstairs room...
Mike Smith
The guy who's really in charge of the building...
Kids and Balloons
I think they'd rather be on the ceiling.
Victor
An old college friend, also working in Beckman. It's how life works.
Low-Light Demo Shot
I at least tried to get some good inside shots during the demos...
Andrew with Balloons
One of our BI admins gets the wonderful duty of ensuring that the helium doesn't escape.
Robotics
I'm not entirely sure what was going on here.
Robotics, II
After all, it's on the other side of the building from me...
Robotics, III
...so knowledge isn't passed. I should have at least gotten a picture of their lab name.
Visiting Girls Mug for the Camera
They were far too amused by my camera.
Making Balloons
The receiving folks get all the tough jobs!
Betsy Sets Up
Her demo started ~15 minutes later.
Lull in the People
The people count dropped for a while...
3D Projection
Betsy and Alexander look on at their work.
3D Projection, II
You can better see the 3D here. Yes, there are two images...
MRI Machine
BIC brought along a non-functional MRI machine as a demo.
MRI Internals
I didn't go in; the people inside seemed freaked out enough.
Telescopes
I got a few pictures of the basement, but again I didn't label them properly.
Bugscope
At least I know which lab this one was.
Flight Simulator
This one too. Of course, it's an easy one to guess.
Car Simulator
This is in the basement. You don't want to know how much work it took to get it into the basement.
Driving Sim Server
Is it any surprise that I had to get a shot of their servers too? It's just in my blood.
Full Program
Two pages of stuff! And only one of our images.
Lunch
Behold! They fed those of us working for the open house!
Displays from Above
Everybody involved is working hard.
Fleet of School Busses
This was the last time the parking lot was seriously used before they started tearing it up.
Closed Captions
Now that's a useful sign. (That's me and Rob in the background.)
EOH, Day 2
Presided over by Al and Catherine this time, apparently.
Preparing for Demo
Rob, Beth's brother, was with me today, so I got to force him to watch our demos.
Kids and 3D Glasses
Technology always looks good with kids underneath.
Attentive Audience
Only the little girl had taken off her glasses. Well, and Rob.
Attentive Audience, II
Look how much cuter the girl is with the oversized glasses on!
Older Folks
It's good to see a mix of an audience.
Middle Crowd
Well, fine, it's actually late high schoolers. That's kindof like middle age!
Demo In Progress
Not bad for the lights being off. Stereo is there to see, there's the other screen, and there's even a couple of monitors worth of displays...
Immersadesk
I'd never actually played with one of these specifically, even though they're all around my field...
Immersadesk with Art
It's fun to see what non-tech people can do with technology.
Newmark
Rob tests his reflexes! Of course, he cheated.
Physics
The true point of the Civil Engineering area was showin that Physics actually existed. I think.
Playing with Concrete
This is where Mel should have been hanging out; instead, we got Amanda. Close!
Concrete in a Petri Dish
This was their actual demo - making little concrete dishes.
Concrete Canoes
Mel made at least a couple of these, I believe.
Our Balloons Move Around
It's good to see at BOH balloon at EOH.
Rob and Concrete Gift
It's for Beth!
Beth Gift
Note the upside-down heart.
Robot Competition
In Kenny Gym, there was a robot competition going on.
Fallen Robot
We got to hear a couple of good *thump*s during the few minutes we were there.
Battlefield
Well, obstacle course. I wish it was Battlebots.
Boring Robot
This robot, in DCL, wasn't likely to fall over! Boring.
Electronic Foozball
ACM SigBot contributed the best idea of the Open House, even if it didn't quite work.
SigMil
SigMil has always been good at making signs.
SigEmbedded
With an embedded '251'!
